>>Furthermore, it explains how a large generation of Jewish people (remember, most of the early Christians were Jewish) would have been willing to risk the damnation of their own souls to hell and reject what had been sociologically embedded in their community for centuries; namely, the Law must be kept for salvation, the Sabbath must be kept, nontrinitarian monotheism...<<

Actually the early Jewish Christians in Jerusalem (led by James, brother of Jesus) were not trinitarians. They kept the Sabbath and the Law. It was Paul out among the pagans/gentiles where all the Christian growth came from. It was also Paul and the pagan/christians who dropped circumcision, dropped sabbath worship, and asserted Jesus/God equality. James and the Jewish Christians were not the big of a leap from the more traditional Jews. (read Galations lately?)

So we have the people close to Jesus saying one thing and Saul/Paul (who had never met Jesus in life) saying another. The most reasonable explanation for this is that Paul's version (and the modern version) of Christianity is not really what the historical Jesus taught.

“The resurrection of Jesus offers the best explanation for the incredible success of the early church. Without the resurrection there would have been no early church.

Well maybe it works for you , but not for everyone who looks on at the play that followed ...or has looked upon history , life and examined the entire body of inspired human thought and emerging awareness...or history itself.

In the Middle East and throughout the Roman Empire was a hotbed of the birth and rise of a new prophets , magicians, philosophers , diviners and soothsayers of every kind and persuasion . A certain consolidation of belief was overdue for the Empire which at the time was predominately involved with the worship of the Sun , and the God Mithra .

The empire was it seems in dire need of a restructuring of it's religion and a new infusion of a new faith is always good as a unifying force . This is obviated by how Constantine utilized these teachings and mysterious new cult as a vehicle to consolidate the empire . Fear of eternal damnation is always a convenient motivator as well...but hardly spiritual. The Sun also rises , and this "Christ" also rises too . It was too easy .

And there were barbarians at the gates...(to be converted as we see later and used as weapons )

The symbol on the shields of the roman warriors of Constantine was the Sun. Interesting parallels of the worship of the Sun and the idea of resurrection and the recurrance and rebirth of the Diety in pure physical terms .

It is true of the early church also succumbed to the belief of the second coming being at hand . Thus people left the cities and went to live in the deserts and refused to plant trees , for they would not live to see them grow.

So many truths , so little time ...
