from what i've seen, buddhism really yanks the proverbial chains of both christians and moslems alike. now why is that? Old story of the Gods of Hinduism sitting in a circle by the fire celebrating their supremacy and powers... All the World's Creation they are responsible for and their creation ...or so they think . The Goddess of the Winds , AGNI the god of Fire , Indra Lord of the Earth , Godess of the waters etc etc . When they begin to notice surrounding their encampment is a glowing mysterious foggy mist , that none of them can claim responsibility for , since everything that exists comes from them ? Looking at each other puzzled Agni calls out to the mist who are you and what do you want . And a voice reply's : "I am the one from which all of you came ,I am the one who is your creator." The Genesis/Creation myth and lineage of the tribal religion of the Old Testament and the Semites , the explanation of Man's Fall into Sin in the Garden of Eden , the giving of God's laws in Covenant to the tribe of Israel , the flood and all the rest becomes rather questionable in the light of such a highly evolved theology , philosophy and cosmologies of the East . So much hinges on God creating the world and man's fall into sin , and giving the "Laws" to only one tribe...and the God's prophecy's fulfillment of a messiah to come , and the promised land . But the legendary Messiah they chose was conveniently only to teach for a very short time , and most of his sayings and parables had already been known and taught before. Always very suspicious to my mind , for so much confusion and violence is there . And it gets rather sticky for them when history reveals have other human groups had just as clear or even a more highly evolved picture of nature and a cosmology even more accurate . How can this be that God had already revealed his truths to others before , and more accurately? To the Hindu , there have been many "Creations" as they see Universes created and uncreated like the opening of a Lotus after vast cycles of time . And their early understanding of the great age of this Universe does indicate that they were not just ignorant mad Idol worshippers as the Moslem's and Christians loved to characterize . And in Buddha or the other great Saint of his time Mahavira we find almost every speech , parable and teaching and understanding of Human nature that was put into the mouth of Jesus 500 yrs later already spoken . Right down to Love & peace that transcendeth , to the last miracle and even the Golden Rule . If God only spoke to the tribe of Israel how could this be ? How could others have been given the same truths just as clearly 1/2 a world away ? ;-) Mohammed solved the problem by calling himself "The Last Prophet of God " which when you read the first chapters of the Koran is pretty questionable right from the start . This was one pretty intolerant, paranoid and violent fellow. No doubt Mohammed had some visions up on his mountain , and learned much of human nature riding along the Caravans , and absorbing much from many discussions with traders from other lands...but his claim of " Last Prophet of God " shows he got just a bit carried away with himself . (one tends to get carried away when alone up on desert mountains for weeks at a time, but they were ever seeing and speeking to God up on those Mountains, though. ) ....the council 400AD in Rome solved the problem for Christianity by elevating Jesus to Godhead status with no equal which Pope John Paul has even recently reiterated the Superiority of Christianity and Jesus Christ...because their model of the Universe is the "right" one ...which history has shown time and again is just another compilation of limited "myths" as well. ***Always find it interesting to note , that Buddhists and Hindus are the Idol worshippers , yet it never dawns on a Roman Catholic or a Jew or a Moslem that they also have just as many magic talismans and holy relics and magic symbols & rituals of worship as a Buddhist or Hindu . I can think of the Kabbaa , drinking the Blood of Christ and eating of his flesh , evil Jinns and devils , belief in Satan and angels , St Christopher medallions , wailing Walls , exorcisms , miraclulous crying statues and magical springs and other fantastic stuff . I remember the Taliban were blowing up the great statues of Buddha in Afghanistan before 9/11 back in the summer/early fall....somehow things haven't gone all that well for them since, in fact very badly.<G> Buddha was very tolerant & accepting of women ...
