milo, my impression from SSB's statements is that he thinks the Claw will be intro'ed at the P4 equivalent speed of 2.8Ghz instead of the AMD rating of 3400+. Read it over again.

Milo Re...SSB thinks Hammer is only ~2% faster than Athlon on IPC?<<<<<

The company provided the latest processor roadmap,
with some pretty impressive claims for the Hammer family, with a 2.8GHz (our estimate; their claim is a 3.4GHz P4 equivalent) part shipping by the yr. 2002. The product is currently sampling with key
customers.<<<<<<

Milo, I took it to mean Johnaton thought the Hammer would be equivalent to a 2.8 ghz P4 rather than a 3400 rating. I realize he says a 2.8 ghz part, but I think he means it will be equivalent to the 2.8 ghz P4.

re: SSB thinks Hammer is only ~2% faster than Athlon on IPC?
but that is more than linear increase in performance, I'd go for that. Unfortunately their expectations are their expectations

Milo,

SSB thinks Hammer is only ~2% faster than Athlon on IPC?

Maybe they reflect some downward revision of Quanti-speed ratings due to improved performance of P4 based on:
- 256K -> 512K L2
- 100 -> 133 MHz FSB (x4)
- Dual RDRAM -> Dual DDR

AMD has never claimed that the QS rating was relative to the P4. AMD has always claimed it was relative to Athlon (TBird). They have now revised the IPC of Clawhammer relative to Athlon XP downwards to about 25% higher rather than 30% higher. Best current guess is Clawhammer will debut at 2.167 GHz.
