In real life, Hitler's generals did not have that kind of balls. They wanted Hitler dead but also to survive.

There were a couple of attempts on his life but nothing so bold as you envision. What you describe would have worked, but the German generals were not bold.

When it became clear that the end was near, some of Hitler's closest associates did countermand his commands to prevent the annihilation of all they held dear, which took guts, but not the kind of guts you are talking about.

No. 4.- Saddam is a nice bulwark to Iranian expansionism. Better the Iraqis than a force which was slated to go home after a victorious campaign.

In your scenario with the senior generals moving against Saddam you would not have a democracy. To get a democracy you would have to root out the Bath party, and then get a large enough part of the country to agree to decide things with votes instead of bullets. If we really want to make Iraq in to a functioning democracy we might have to be there for a long time.
