"In shopping for a house recently, I'm baffled as to why so many RE agents emphasize a housing purchase as an "investment". Why should every allocation of money need to be an "investment"?"

excellent point. i attended a speech once given by the president of the california association of realtors. he stressed the very same thing. he said that realtors needed to get back to the fact that what they are selling is shelter, and not investments.

the problem, however, often begins with members of the buying public who initiate the "investment" line of thinking when they are looking for a home.

imo, the realtor who overlooks the fact that he or she is selling "shelter", first and foremost, and who allows the homebuying endeavor to go forward under the auspices of "investing", is missing the greater picture, is providing a disservice to the client, and in all likelihood, is missing out on closing some sales.
