The thing that gets my goat is that NW had proposed a plan which would have paid off the FCC the entire amount of the debt a few years ago. If the FCC had any sense, the whole mess would have been ancient history by now.

What a stupid fiasco. It could have all been avoided.

the actual VALUE of hte spectrum may be less now and perhaps the FCC will nto get even the $11B they negotiated at the end of last year by the time this is all settled....

It may not even be worth the 4.6 Billion Nextwave Bid!

You have to understand about what made Cellular/PCS spectrum so valuable in the first place!

The reason the spectrum was so valuable was simple. In order to take advantage of cheap UT and Infrastructure, you needed spectrum in which this "Off the shelf" equipment was designed for! Companes like Nextel decided to strike out on their own and acquire cheap spectrum, but the cheaper spectrum was offset with the need for more expensive "one-off" Infrastructure and User Terminals that MOT had to design. Nextel can not enjoy the economics of scale that Cellular/PCS providers receive from manufactures that build "generic" 800/1900 Mhz single and multi-band phones for a large number of service providers.

The point is, is that technology, and loss of economics of scale, is what hindered the ability of a service provider from acquiring cheaper "non standard" PCS/Cellular spectrum and building a "one-off" system like Nextel did!

With RadioOne Zero IF technology. The Infrastructure and User Terminals will become much more "Frequecy Agile". The cost of development of specialized IF and RF components for such a one-off system will disappear. The exclusive need for spectrum within the established Cellular/PCS spectrum will be gone!

For Data Applications, and Voice IP. Even the need for FDD paired spectrum will be gone, by simply using TDD.

Zero IF and TDD will dramatically change the valuation of PCS/Cellular spectrum! Because the absolute need to use paired FDD spectrum, and standard PCS/Cellular frequecies will disappear!

The future major wireless telecom players will be those that understand how to use these emerging technologies to build nationwide networks on much cheaper spectrum.

engineer. With 1X & HDR working so well AND diversity antennas on the way AND with Q building multimode ASICSl, I wonder if Verizon really wants to spend cash on spectrum. I see Verizon running for the door here. Also, wonder if Cingular & Voicestream wouldn't just as soon wait until later if Sprint and Verizon have lost interest. This is really humorous in a way as FCC is undone by its own lying and greed.
