Sunw due to ORCL sure, but down also due to ML Milunovich commenting that business is "soft" in the channels. He thinks that the mid-quarter update will be negative. I think the opposite. I believe that the channel samples are not fully accounted for. Laura Conigliaro also feels the same way, but is a little more optimistic that business IT spending can do more than just drag on the bottom as she describes it.

I suspect SUNW down cos of ORCL

When ORCL announced their shortfall on Friday, I calculated the correlation coefficient of Sun's closing prices with that of ORCL over two years and 3 months. It was a surprisingly large 0.92.

However, when I calculated the 40 day correlation coefficients, they were more likely to be negative than positive over the last 40 to 50 days.

In short, the correlation between Sun's and Orcl's prices has been broken. I suppose, if Orcl continues to fall, it may establish a positive corrl. with Sun.
