No one is talking about it, but the ISS recommendation (due out in about an hour) on the HP/CPQ merger could have huge implications for AMD. First, I think AMD would sell more Athlon XP processors to HP and CPQ as separate companies. Also, if the merger goes through, and the combined entity decides to drop AMD, it could be a disaster for AMD.

Hmm, if they are using 9 metal layers, that means that they are using all the process was designed for...

Picture the metal layers like the layers on a circuit board. In general, the more layers, the more compact things can be. With modern chips, wiring everything together becomes a massive chore. If they had used less metal layers, then they would have had to make the die larger so that there was room to route everything...

It's the metal connecting the transistors. There is only one layer of silicon (with transistors).

I am hardly a process engineer; but I thought I read somewhere that the thinner the lines, the deeper the lines would have to be to carry the current, and it would take more layers.

The nine layers of metal are the interconnects. Think of it as a nine layer PCB board versus a six layer PCB board.

Hardly, although this would be in interesting way to shrink a processor, I understand it is only potentially practical with optical processors.
