Actually, I see it collapsing more from internal contradictions than anything else. Using the military might of the U.S. to prop up the Enrons of this country who want to run oil and gas pipelines out of the Caspian is eventually going to stick in the craw of the American public. While most who are driving around in their EarthRaper SUVs (nicknamed "Sherman", for the tank) are in denial about our dependence on some pretty dicey parts of the planet, they'll eventually see the light as "911 incidents" become just part of everyday living and dying.

You'll reaaaally love the irony of this one:

Here in Oregon, we have a little problem with not enough state tax revenue. So the Republican legislature, in all its wisdom, decided that one solution was to double the vehicle registration fee on the Toyota Prius and any similarly efficient vehicle. The logic was that since these vehicles use so little fuel, they'd be costing the state at the pump. Joseph Heller could have used this material in Catch-22, don't you think?
