I dunno about that. The business has been fragmented ever since Compaq started up. In fact, it has moved even further away from consolidation ever since the whole clone business got started back in the early to mid-80s. I has always amazed me that little shops that buy maybe 10 at a time can put systems together and sell them for the same or lower price than companies that buy in quantity 1 million...

HPaq will wind up losing market share at a faster rate than they are now. The merger would stall the companies as HP tries to digest Compaq, and that will kill them. Dell will wind up with more market share than they have now, and the vacuum created will cause some of the larger white box manufacturers to make a play for becoming a tier 1 company. There are opportunities that will open up...
