>> New 3G Alliance In Japan

Japanese electronics giants Toshiba Corp and Mitsubishi Electric Corp are in the final stages of striking an alliance in the development of third-generation (3G) mobile handsets, national broadcaster NHK reported on Wednesday.

The alliance will involve the sharing of technology to reduce development costs for the next-generation mobile phones, whose fast speeds make possible more complex applications such as video conferencing and fast Internet content downloads, it said.

Mitsubishi officials declined to comment, while Toshiba officials were not immediately available.

The tie-up would be the latest in a string of development alliances between mobile handset makers, which have been hammered by the downturn in spending for information technology-related products.

Rivals NEC Corp and Matsushita Electric Industrial Co Ltd joined forces last summer to build a common operating system for 3G phones for the global market.

Sony Corp and Sweden's Ericsson set up a joint venture about six months ago in London to develop handsets. The joint venture on Tuesday unveiled six new cellphones in Europe.

Toshiba shares were up 0.95 percent at 534 yen, while Mitsubishi Electric shares were 0.57 percent higher at 531 yen in early trade. The Nikkei 225 average was about one percent higher. <<
