UbiNetics here:ubinetics.com . >> Smooth 3G Hand-Over 5th March 2002 3G UbiNetics has launched multi-mode protocol software to ensure that the transition from GSM/GPRS to 3G is problem-free. The software builds on UbiNetics' established single mode UMTS protocol software, by adding GSM and GPRS functionality. As initial 3G coverage will be limited, the solution enables users to use services on GSM/GPRS networks, as well as high-speed 3G networks. It also handles the complex hand-over between 2G/2.5G and 3G networks, so the user experience is not adversely affected. For example, if the quality of the signal significantly deteriorates when making a call on a UMTS cell, the software automatically falls back to GPRS/GSM cells to ensure that the communications continue. Using its test product range, UbiNetics can prove its protocol software at an early stage. This ensures interoperability, which decreases risk and speeds up the roll-out of 3G services. UbiNetics is currently working with all major 3GPP infrastructure developers to ensure the protocol software is compatible with their network equipment. The company supplies multi-mode protocol software pre-integrated and from a single source. UbiNetics' multi-mode solution was developed from the outset to support 2/2.5/3G, while competitors may have to significantly restructure their legacy GSM/GPRS solution to support UMTS. "UbiNetics aims to take the pain out of the transition to 3G for handset and semiconductor manufacturers. Our protocol software is fast gaining momentum with new licensees in Taiwan and the US, which adds to our Korean and Japanese customer base," said Bob Thomas, vice president of business development, Americas, at UbiNetics. "The pre-integrated technology and proven interoperability gives our customers a fast-track to 3G multi-mode products." In order to ensure that UbiNetics' licensees have access to a variety of hardware platforms, UbiNetics plans to port the protocol software to a number of different chipset platforms. << - Eric -
