RtS,
I hope you didn't short ESST as of now. (got upgraded today)

I still got MKSI in my portfolio (I used to own ASTX in the past which was souped up by MKSI). I might feel inclined to swap that for VECO but haven't done yet. VECO might be lackluster in the short run but mid to long term they have a great assortment of technology. Recently they bought Applied EPitronics, a high end specialized maker of MBE equipment. I currently own shares in a French competitor to VECO/Applied Epi called Riber (traded in Paris). That company is still profitable in the current slump and trading around 4 € in Paris ticker: 7595.PA or RIBE.LN. There's an ADR available on the PinkSheets too. Price/Sales is around 2. But VECO's PSR is even lower, around 1.60 - however VECO is no pure play and carrier a lot of legacy (disk drive related operations) as well.

It's funny how a company like VECO morphed thru acquisitions over the past years. VECO today is totally different to VECO 3 years ago. Their legacy business were Disk drive related sputtering, some plasma biz and MOCVD. Then they bought IonTech thin film deposition (for DWDM telecom filter and optical coating). Acquired CVCI (MOCVD, disk sputtering). Recently acquired Applied Epi.

Meanwhile in Japan, the Nikkei is nibbling with the 10.600 range. My holding New Japan Radio was upgraded recently by 2 brokerages (one from neutral to buy and another from neutral to strong buy) - this might have contributed to the 50% gain. It's up today, too - now around 670 Yen. The 670-700 Yen looks like containing slight overhead resisitance..

The other stock I mentioned, Hitachi Cable is zooming ahead.. Up 5% today. EMKR / KOPN competitor for InP wafers (among other compound semiconductor operations)

ciao
