Columbus did come back to the Spanish court with the sheep mounting disease. But it was not entirely unkown to the continent. It is recorded in the ME in the early days too.

Unless my source of info was mistaken, it was the
Europeans that brought VD, especially syphilis, to the New World!!! They brought other diseases including small-pox with the help of which Cortez conquered the Mexicans.

It was reported that before the "white" folks invaded Hawaii, the natives there roamed happily about in their birthday suits. But, after the advent of the missionaries
the natives were required to cover themselves. And, to encourage (or rather to help enforce this) thorny plants were grown all over the islands!
