I am still not convinced that HP and Compaq will pay off. Remember Burroughs and Sperry a/k/a Unisys. NCR and AT&T. We know about Compaq/DEC. It may be that hardware is harder to integrate than software. I don't know much about the first two mergers but I do know that the CPQ/DEC merger was a disaster. However, there are many mergers that go well and benefit the bottom line pretty quickly. Its possible HWP/CPQ could be one of those mergers. But Carly is no Gerstner. For one, she's all vision, which I suspect is a hard thing to do at $80bln of revenue. For another, she looked like a meanie mudslinger which is not so inspiring. Hewlett was only guarding his $$$, director or not, and that's natural. All of course JIMHO. I agree........she's no Gerstner but you have to wonder why she would bother to go thru all this hassle. She didn't have to do a merger.......there's enough to do at HWP to keep her busy. I suspect there are some compelling reasons for pushing a merger and that's why she is behind it. Re Sun. I guess I was fortunate to be out in good time. But if it does turn into a mere boxmaker, I suspect its cost structure isn't right, so margins won't be great, and the P/S will need to come down. But I was actually musing here about the impact of HPaq on Sun (and converse). According to CNBC, SUNW will be making still another announcement this afternoon.........actually in about a half hour. CNBC is speculating they are about to announce an acquisition. ted

(SUNW.O) on Friday said it filed a private antitrust suit against Microsoft Corp. (MSFT.O) in United States District Court in San Jose, California claiming that the software giant engaged in unfair business practices. Sun said the complaint alleges that its business was damaged by Microsoft's anti-competitive conduct. The suit stems, in part, from Microsoft's decision to ship its Windows XP operating system without any support for Sun's Java software. Sun also called for Microsoft to disclose and license the computing protocols and formats related to products such as Internet Explorer, which is used by consumers to access the Internet. Microsoft was not immediately available for comment. Sun, which makes large computers that manage corporate networks, has long had a bitter relationship with Microsoft and has sued the company in the past. Sun General Counsel Michael Morris said that Sun requested that the court require Microsoft to begin immediately including its Java software on Windows XP. Microsoft, found to have violated antitrust law in a landmark case brought by the federal government and state attorneys general, faces private antitrust suits from consumers and a suit filed in January by AOL Time Warner (AOL.N). "We expected Sun to sue Microsoft just like AOL did, based on the findings of the District court that Microsoft was in fact a monopoly," said Brendan Barnicle, an analyst with Pacific Crest Securities.
