Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. (TSMC) today said the shortened calendar in February was the cause of its first monthly sales dip in since May 2001.

Net sales for February declined by 4.8 percent from January levels, falling to about $328.8 million (11.5 billion Taiwanese dollars) because of the Chinese Lunar Year holidays and February being a short month, said Harvey Chang, TSMC senior VP, in a statement. Revenues for the first two months of this year combined were about $674.1 million (23.5 billion TWD).

Despite the monthly decline, on a quarterly basis revenues are still up from the fourth quarter and a 5 percent to 10 percent growth rate is expected for the first quarter of 2002, the company said. For the fourth quarter of 2001, the world’s largest foundry reported a net income of about $129.2 million (4.5 billion TWD) on revenues of about $947.9 million (33.1 billion TWD).

Compared to February 2001, monthly sales have declined 1.3 percent from about $333 million (11.6 billion TWD). For the first two months of 2002, TSMC’s sales declined 15.3 percent from about $796.2 million (27.8 billion TWD) in the same period last year.
