I read some articles this morning on which teams can dance and which are potential wallflowers... Seems as though everyone and his brother are picking either Duke, Kansas or Maryland to win it all this year. It's as if the other 61 teams don't even exist.

Of course, I disagree with that premise. Sure, there will be some teams on the dance card that (to date) clearly haven't played as though they were one of the top 64 teams in the country. Just by way of example, Siena will likely be eliminated in the first minute of the first game of the first round, and Winthrop likely tastes the agony of defeat during the pre-game ceremonies... But there are other capable teams in the tournament this year.

I think Oklahoma has a decent shot of making the final four, as does Cincinnati. Pittsburgh is no slouch. Arizona can play the game well against the best of competition, when they remained focused.

Take a quick look at Maryland. They have losses to Duke, Oklahoma and Arizona, three teams that on paper anyway, might be at the final four. To be sure, the Terps are a good team this year, but they are not invincible.

Duke has losses to Florida State, Maryland and Virginia. While the Cavaliers have a decent team this season, it's very difficult to easily explain away Duke's loss to the Seminoles, in a game where Duke was a clear-cut favorite. The win over Duke is the highlight of this year's season for Florida State.

Kansas has losses to Ball State (first game of the season) and UCLA. Ball State? Okay, Kansas wasn't ready yet. UCLA? Okay, almost no team ever goes the entire season undefeated... Incredibly, Kansas rather easily won all of the so-called "tough" games, like Arizona and Oklahoma...

I guess the point is that none of the top three seeds is unbeatable. All of them can be beaten and all of them have tasted defeat this season. I expect that at least one of them will be out of the tournament prior to the final four. Remember, the tournament isn't about who is the best team in the country. The tournament is all about which team in the country can win the final six games of the season. And in a season that lasts for just six games, there are many teams that will have more than merely a decent chance.
