What is "backyard" in British, anyway?

We don't really have an equivalent term. Maybe 'back garden', but this tends to mean a larger, grassed lawn with a path, flowerbed(s) etc. I'd probably say 'at the back' to refer to a small back yard area.
Bearing in mind that we've got 50M people crammed into an area about 1/3 of California, we have a surprising number of back gardens - but they're mostly probably way smaller than most such in the US, there just isn't the space.

Everyone would understand back yard, I just don't think it sounds very English to say it...
