Sorry Ten, it was May 2000, not May 1999. I was a line off in the table. So speeds have been just about stalled for 2 years, not three.

Apologies.

However, it remains that, in May of 2000, large cache (high ASP) Xeons were at 700mhz, while small cache (low ASP) Xeons were at 900mhz.

Today, large cache (high ASP) Xeons are at 900mhz, while small cache (low ASP) Xeons are at 2.2GHZ.

Paul's point was that really expensive Xeons were still being offered for sale. My point was that there would be a lot fewer such sales, since much faster, much cheaper systems (Intel based) were competing with those expensive systems.

If you want to conclude that there hasn't been an impact on the mix of high ASP vs. low ASP servers due to the nearly total stall in the performance level of Intel's high ASP server parts for about 2 years - go ahead.

Intel's fastest large-cache CPU was only running at 550 MHz in May 1999. The 700 MHz Cascades wasn't released until mid-2000.

Maybe Dan was going by the date Cascades was supposed to be released, Q3 1999, if I remember correctly. <g>
