What "appeared" to Hamilton to be "materially connected with the prosperity of.." a nation(manufacturing) was true enough. In the quote you offer he doesn't advocate protectionism- but assuming he did, I can only say he was in error. As Milton Friedman once pointed out in his "Free To Choose" series on PBS, it takes multiple(17, was it?) countries just to create a pencil! We cannot be as an island alone.

Let every country compete in doing what it can do(or can do best, in many cases), free from protectionism, and life will be easier/less expensive for citizens of all countries involved.

Freedom Works,

Dan B

How "home grown" do you think Big Steel really is? Ya know where they get big chuncks of their iron ore? Imported from Brazil, Mexico and Canada. Why not use the abundant supplies within our borders? Cost.

So while it's important that Big Steel's customers buy domestically, it's important for Big Steel to buy its raw materials at the best price.

Big Steel: Big Hypocrites.
