Re: BUT YOU CLAIMED AMD DID BUY THE FAB !!!

At the time that post was made, the reports were that AMD had gained control of the FAB when it started making payments on it.

Remember, the Fujitsu half of the partnership had been responsible for production, while the AMD half was responsible for design and engineering. For AMD to start paying to build a FAB represented a big change in the way the partnership was organized. As it turned out, the FAB was mothballed, so it didn't really matter who controlled it.

The speculation I made back then does still hold - If Hammer is a huge success, AMD has access to a partially completed new FAB in Oregon that was designed to start production at .13 on 300mm wafers. They could ramp Gresham a lot sooner than the planned AU FAB, it Hammer did spectacularly well (meaning AMD could afford it).

I expect Hammer to do really well, but not that well.

But, you never know.
