whale meat is high in vitamin c. i believe they also might have gotten vitamin c from eating the stomach contents of caribou and such. at any rate they had to eat their meat raw. when british explorers came to study the inuit they got scurvy even though they ate the same diet while they were there. the trouble is, the explorers liked their meat cooked. they found out real quick that cooking destroyed the vitamin c.
