Re: "Philosophical discussions are nice, but without a steel industry in our country, we are vulnerable. It's as simple as that."

You're absolutely right, Joe.
There are certain areas of manufacturing that a country can do without; steel is not one of them.

What good are the integrated mills without raw materials to feed them? Do you think you just drop a shovel into a pit and dig it up?

$Trillions have been invested in mining infrastructure. Some of the highgrading plants are as complex as an integrated steel mill. If our national security depends on cranking out steel within our borders then we have to protect our domestic mining industry and slap 40% tariffs on imported iron ore.

But wait. You can't produce domestic ore without machinery. Our national security depends on doing it all ourselves so we need to slap 50% tariffs on all imported mining equipment to protect our domestic heavy equipment industry (what's left of it).

But wait, you can't produce mining equipment without machine tools. Our national security depends on doing it all ourselves so we have to protect our domestic machine tool industry. We need 60% tariffs on all imported machine tools.

But wait, if we keep going down this path our economy and the worlds will collapse. And if we don't our national security will be in the hands of sleazy foreigners.

What to do? Oh well, our politicians will figure it out.
