True which is why elaborate plants and processes were built some 30 years ago to high-grade the taconite and package it into pellets with very consistent I think about 60% iron content. I am told that these pellets are the ideal feed stock and the folks who run the steel mills would prefer to use it exclusively, except for the cost.

A process exists, called direct reduction that can produce a pure iron product from taconite. It is apparently uneconomic since no one is rushing to invest in a plant. This has not stopped backers from constantly lobbying the MN legislature to spend tax dollars on such a plant.
