A Wall Street Journal Online News Roundup

Asian-Pacific stocks finished mostly lower Wednesday, as markets tracked losses on Wall Street.

Tokyo's benchmark Nikkei 225 Stock Average lost 1.65%, after investors sold major technology and banking issues. Traders said losses in the U.S. weighed on sentiment.

Hong Kong shares also ended lower, with telecom shares declining following warnings from Nokia that the company expects a drop in first-quarter sales.

Singapore's shares ended slightly higher on late buying in technology stocks, but trade was thin as the market struggled to find direction.

Elsewhere, Australian stocks finished slightly lower following a mixed bag of corporate announcements. Results from Austar United Communications, Seven Network Holdings and QBE Insurance elicited different responses from investors, reflecting the mixed feeling in the broader market.

South Korean shares closed higher, as local investor buying helped offset profit-taking by foreigners. Taiwan stocks ended slightly lower, as technology shares retreated following the drop in U.S. shares.
