Arafat couldn't maintain any credibility with his people under the terms of Camp David - the splitting up of the Palestian territory into small fragmented pieces. Israel may want peace as you put it but it goes about it in a strange way, and in the end it will lose. The reality is that the Palestinians don't want the end of the State of Israel, they may 'wish'but they know it is not a possibility. The Israelis, or the militant ones use this old saw as an excuse for their actions. But it don't wash.

Its to easy to make sweeping statements about the morals of nations.Unfortunately the situation is more complex, each side has extreme factions who are opposed to peace on any terms but their own.Re. Barak: was he not assasinated by an extemist of his own faith just as the predecessor of Pres Mubarak,Anwar Sadat of egypt was assasinated.Remember the Suez Crisis in the 50's when Isreal,France and England launched a surprise attack on Egypt.
