We didn't even join the League of Nations, which was Woodrow Wilson's conception in the first place. You have to remember how dead-set the American public was against foreign entanglements, especially in Europe. This was Roosevelt and Churchill at their most magnificent ... coaxing and nudging the American people into acceptance of a global role. Did you know that even after Pearl Harbor the Congressional vote for a declaration of war was not unanimous?
