The attacks on this book are way out of proportion if it were some poorly done fabrication. The NRA is clearly as frightened of this book
as it is in the word "militia" in the Constitution.

The book won a NATIONAL AWARD, poorly done or not. That publicity is hard to overcome (retractions are historically on the back pages), short of a public hanging of the author, which academe will not allow. NRA frightened? Never underestimate your enemy.

Depends what type of book Mr. Bellesiles was writing. If he meant to write a scholarly book, faking data is about as bad as it gets.
