Ted,

actually I came over here to ask you or someone else.....do you know if the hammers are supposed to start at 1 G? And if not, at what level?

There was an article somewhere (The Street.com?) that mentioned it. I don't think it is true. AMD mentioned that the demo system (first silicon) shown at IDF was running in that ballpark, but doesn't say anything about the actual shipping parts. My guess is that it will start at approximately 2 GHz.

Joe

Re: do you know if the hammers are supposed to start at 1 G? And if not, at what level?

No one who actually knows will be posting the information on a discussion group thread.

But... 10 stage pipeline, Bulk silicon thoroughbred will be running at about 2.2GHZ (2600+) in Q4. My WAG is that 12 stage pipeline, SOI hammer will probably debut at 2.0GHZ and 2.2GHZ (3100+ and 3400+ given the expected high IPC) and move fairly rapidly to 3GHZ (4400+) before the end of next year.

In the same time frame, Intel will be going from 3GHZ to 4.?GHZ - Anyone have any guesses on how high Intel will be able to scale P4 by the end of next year? 4? 4.5? 5?

Itanic is going to be facing some tough competition. If Xeon isn't scaled rapidly, Hammer will gain a lot of share, if Xeon is pushed hard, Hammer may or may not gain much share, but Itanic will most likely sink.

The more Intel pushes its high end 64-bit processor, the more valuable Hammer will appear.

While no one has stated the mhz, it is possible to get an accurate guess. Jerry and Dirk have stated that Hammer would have an 3400+ rating. Yesterday there was a report that Hammer would have a 20 to 25 % IPC improvement over XP. If the improvement is at the 25% level, then the Hammer would be running at (.75x3400) 2550 rated XP. Right now the XP2000 runs at 1.67 ghz which is a 1.2 multiplier so 2550/1.2= 2.12 ghz. IF the improvement in OPC = 20%, then the Hammer would run at the same speed as a 2720 XP which would be 2.26 ghz. So if the 3400 rating is correct and the 20 to 25% IPC improvement is correct, Hammer should run between 2.12- 2.26 ghz.
