This is a popular but rather incredulous belief. Yes, if you are Gateway, the trimming the processor vendors from 2 to 1 can reduce the number of total suppliers you deal with by as much as 10%, resulting in significant savings.

But, for a diversified products company like HP, they already have 100s of suppliers for everything from components for inkjets, scanners, DVD RAM drives, digital cameras, to components for a wide range of computing products. Trimming the number of processor vendors for a part of their product portfolio from 2 to 1 is not going to have a significant net savings.
