the true cost of each execution is approximately $3.2 million, or approximately six times the cost of a life-imprisonment sentence."

I am a recent convert to your side in this. The above was a big factor in my thinking. The overhead of capital punishment, financial and otherwise, is just not worth it.

Cops use the death penalty threat in hostage negotiations. Hostage negotiations 101. Find any stats on how many murders have been avoided through good negotiations?

Cops use the death penalty threat in witness interrogations and in plea agreements. Any stats on how many murderers have been taken off the street by these means?

Seriously, there can be no doubt that it is a deterrent when viewed from law enforcement's perspective.

What is the cost of letting murderers go free because accomplices cannot be bullied into a plea using the death penalty as a hammer? How many more crimes will be committed and how many more trials will be held for the freed murderer? More than $3 million worth.
