Then why is Sharon bending to international pressure?

Calculations of necessity are not the same thing as trust.

But right now they can generate sympathy for their cause.

Don't hold your breath.

The Arab world will only be emboldened by the appeasement and scream louder for conflict, followed by their me-too chorus in Europe. That's most of world opinion right there.

But if both sides play their cards right, they can be the recipients of the biggest global bribe in history, as the rest of the world decides buying their way to peace is less expensive than letting these two parties drag the entire region into all-out conflict.

The US and Israel wants to end the conflict. The Arab world wouldn't know how to live without it; it's a wonderful perpetual excuse for them as to why now is not a good time for internal reform. They're not afraid of being dragged into all-out conflict; do you see any Arab armies mobilizing? They're not such fools. The Palestinian know they must direct their PR campaign to Europe to get any mileage. And the conflict doesn't seem to bother Europe much either.
