You've got to be kidding. What protectionist decrees caused the stoppage of the free flow of goods to and from China - (in the time period after the Opium Wars and before the Revolution)? The fact of the matter is, that after the British forced the Chinese to allow the importation of Opium, trade between China and the West exploded. The amount of tea and silks that China (the items most desired by the west) produced and exported, and grew dramatically.
