Great point.

Why even try them?

Why even arrest them?

Why even have laws?

No need for laws if you're not going to enforce penalties.

Think of the money that would save.

We could have a totally abstract system of justice, and it wouldn't cost us anything.

I think you misunderstand my point.

I am not saying that locking criminals up or executing them does not deter other criminals. I also did not say it didn't prevent them from committing future crimes. I am rather looking at the more abstract philosophical question "what is justice".

In the real world you wont see me arguing for putting criminals on the street. I'm not advocating policy, I'm not even really giving answers in terms of philosophy. I am rather asking questions and examining ideas.
