What he does may be more important than what he says.

I think a church, as an institution, has unique problems in dealing with internal misconduct. Forgiveness and redemption are cornerstones of belief, and it is inherently contradictory to some church officials to condemn sinners. Churches go by the principle of condemning the sin and not the sinner. Thus, when someone like Geoghan is uncovered, the knee-jerk reaction of hierarchy is to view him (as one of their own) with compassion and to try to rehabilitate him. So a cover-up results, but not with the malevolent intent of the run-of-the-mill cover-ups that are exposed (Nixon, e.g.). This scandal has shown the fallacy of that appoach, in terms of insufficient concern for victims. Hopefully the church will work out this conflict in some way that is compatible with preventing harm, yet remaining non-judgmental and compassionate.
