<< The argument has been made that the death penalty does not deter murder, that statistics show that, >>

Statistics show the opposite. It's a now debunked myth that it doesn't deter.

The murder rate in New York dropped 23% in 1995, the year the death penalty was implemented. No other year comes close.

The murder rate in North Carolina dropped 14% in 1995, the year the death penalty was implemented. No other year comes close.

The death penalty is a deterrent.

I agree with you that the death penalty is a deterrent. It is, for good reason, painfully difficult to get from sentence to execution. Hence, there are not great cost savings between life imprisonment and death sentence.
