Elmer,

So why would anybody switch from Xeon to Hammer?

Performance, performance / price, painless migration to 64-bit.

Btw, why did people switch from Katmai based Xeon to Coppermine, Cascades, Tualatin, Foster, Prestonia based Xeons?

Joe

The key word here is switch. Switching would be a big deal, but they don't have to. Did people see a big hurdle "switching" from 286 to 386? Nope, they just buy Hammers when they need more power. Same OS, same applications, same management systems, same operations personnel.

They can go 64 bit if they want to, but for the first couple of years I see people buying Hammer just because it is the fastest 32 bit machine they can buy.
