If a third party wanted to write an app, it would first have to cut a license deal with Microsoft, and pay the monopolist 50% royalties on app sales. Certain API functions would automatically invoke a charge to the user's card.

actually the consumer computer as we know it would not have existed, with out apple showing IBM that there was a market for the desktop, IBM would have never decided to throw together a box to test this market, nobody thought it would amount to much, so IBM would have never contacted MSFT to go buy DOS........

eventually, lets hope, there would have been a desktop market developed much later in history, probably without IBM or MSFT, if apple never existed....
