Combjelly,

Re: "AMD needs a small die until it can get access to 300mm wafers, so basically through 2005."

And this access is entirely based on their "joint partnership" with
UMC ... Hahaha. Do you guys have any idea what the issues and
problems are associated with this strategy ... or should I say, lack of strategy. <ggg>

Make It So,
Yousef

combjelly, I generally agree with all you said, with
few nit-picked exceptions I would not bother to mention.

Yes, AMD does improve processors. So does Intel.
My point was simply that having bigger capacity and
ability to manufacture bigger die at reasonable
cost will allow Intel to maintain bragging rights for
perfomance lead (like they got in SPEC CPU2000
benchmark suite). This gives Intel tremendous
advantages with regard to pricing, with heavy
negative implications for AMD's ASP, and
for many years to come (as you seem to agree
about 2005 transition to 300mm), unless the Hammer
platform is a true miracle.

Regards,

- Ali
