This was tried "long ago" ... Trend has been to move off-chip cache
to on-chip. Something about running the cache at CPU speed. At present
clock rates, cache can't be located far from CPU (light travels roughly one
foot per nanosecond). Hope this helps to bring you up to "modern"
times. <ggg>
