Joel -- You know about popsicle-stick economics, right? Parents on a block get together and issue one another popsicle sticks good for a night of babysitting. Besides being a canonical analogy for money supply, these things actually can work. Dividing M3 by total gold is something like dividing popsicle parents' net worth by the number of sticks.
