Westford, Massachusetts, March 27 (Bloomberg) -- Sonus Networks Inc., a maker of telecommunications gear and computer programs, will have a first-quarter loss of 8 cents a share, twice as wide as estimates, because of declining U.S. demand.

The projected loss excludes expenses for restructuring, the amortization of goodwill, stock-based compensation and other costs, Sonus said in a Business Wire release. The company didn't estimate its net loss.

Sales will total about $21 million, Sonus said. The company blamed ``deterioration in the U.S. telecom industry for both emerging carriers and even the largest providers.''

Sonus was expected to have a loss of 4 cents a share, the average estimate of analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial/First Call.

The company plans to record first-quarter expenses of ] $5 million to $10 million expense for excess inventory.
