The only thing I think is bad about hunting is that the hunter kills the best of the herd, while the wolf or mt lion kills the worst.

The hunting laws say you can't shoot deer that don't have a certain length horn, which means you are killing the biggest horned deer. That deer, I would imagine would be the "best" of the herd. It's kind of backwards. Do you kind of see what I am getting at?

Nature culls the weakest, man culls the strongest.

I don't have anything other than that against hunting, I think it's a great sport.

Re: "If you are a lonely hunter, like me, it might take you three days to get the meat out of the woods on your back."

Wouldn't it just be easier to go to a private hunting park and shoot a big-ass elk from the front seat of your SUV?

Fascinating tale, Dave Ellen, however I've just resolved to become a vegetarian. <g>

Anyone who hunts un-endangered species for necessary sustenance is justified in doing so.

Why would the elk die during winter? What's their usual diet?

I met a guy in Taos NM who went Elk hunting with a bow. Took a motor home up into the mountains pulling a Jeep to use to get the horse trailer and horse. He parked and bugled for the hell of it and was answered. Grabbed his bow and ran up the mountain where he met the bull coming down. One arrow ar 20' and the bull died against his motor home. Now that's close to being easy. BTW the mount of his 6x6 looks somewhat silly in a room with an 8' ceiling.
