I've been studying this environment thing for over 12 years. Kind of a hobby, you know. I still don't get it -perhaps due to my low IQ- why northern people's mind as so fired-up by this rain forests thing.

When I don't find a reason I always put it in the psychological shelf. You know like Americans so incensed about defense, which is a result of they watching too many western films where they saw people barricade against furious savages.

In the case of forests, I think it is the books they listened to their parents reading before going to bed. I read to my daughter and it dawned on me I am creating a rain forest type of kid. (God forbid!)

The stories I read for here has frogs, forests, lakes, meadows and animals etc etc.

I think those northerners have listened to those stories and they think about a 2 million+ Km2 (nick-named Green Hell here) of area like their back yard.

Then they see wood imprints in cement, and their fired up imagination goes straight to Sarawak, not to a recycled wooden crate made of Australian eucalyptus.
