This week at JavaOne, Sprint clearly created a buzz with the 3G-enabled handsets that demonstrated mobile games and other applications downloaded live from the Sprint Third Generation Network running for the show at the conference center, and with the newly released Sprint-specific development tools. Sprint, which operates the largest all-digital, all-PCS nationwide network and is the fastest growing wireless carrier, today concluded a successful week at JavaOne, where it unveiled several different wireless programming components.

Sprint distributed free toolkits designed specifically for Java programmers who desire to place their applications on Sprint's 3G network. The Sprint PCS Developer Resource Kit(SM) includes a Sprint-specific JAVA API (Application Programming Interface) document. The Sprint PCS Wireless Toolkit(SM) for the Java platform testing environment for J2ME includes device emulators -- the essential technical components needed to create wireless applications for Sprint's Third Generation Network.

"Sprint's Java programming toolkits connect content developers with the components necessary to design applications for Sprint's 3G network," said John Yuzdepski, vice president and general manager of Sprint's PCS.com division. "Combine our new toolkit with the strategic advice of our Application Developer's Program and the second Developer's Conference in August, and developers should have everything they need to get started with Sprint."

Proving that these dynamic Java applications will be accessible on cutting-edge devices in the very near future, Sprint showcased two new handsets that will be available with the planned launch of its 3G network in mid-2002. With their sleek and stylish packages, the two new Sprint Third Generation Phones by Samsung, the SPH-n400 and the SPH-a500, combine full-color screens, polyphonic ringers and sounds through CMX technology, and high-speed Internet access to support new and enhanced applications.

For Sprint customers, 3G1X services are expected initially to provide faster wireless data speeds and enhancements to existing applications and services when using 3G-enabled devices like the n400 and a500. This also establishes a platform for subsequent releases of new and more robust applications, including email with attachments, interactive messaging and wireless digital imaging, as data speeds increase.

"As we launch Sprint's Third Generation Network, it will be increasingly important to provide our customers with the means to connect to the people and information most important to them," added Yuzdepski. "Aggregating the best-designed JAVA applications with flexible content stocking, management and intelligent content presentation will ensure Sprint customers receive the most complete, dynamic 3G experience possible."

The Sprint PCS Application Developer's Program coordinated and managed the activities and demonstrations at JavaOne. The group is designed to help developers turn programming ideas into successful wireless applications. The program assists them by providing relevant technical information, a discussion forum to answer questions and a newsletter that offers the latest information on Sprint's innovative services. <<

Verizon Wireless to Launch Express Network, Significantly Boosting Speed Capability

CHICAGO, April 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Verizon Wireless will launch its high-speed data and voice Express Network throughout the Chicago area on April 2, 2002, giving customers significantly faster and more robust wireless capabilities. Verizon Wireless is the first and only U.S. wireless carrier to commercially introduce a sizable 1XRTT, 3G (third generation) network footprint.

The 1XRTT network enhances all levels of wireless data communication - full Internet access, game playing and email, to enterprise applications that give companies with mobile employees tools for increased productivity and efficiency. Express Network also enhances the wireless experience of many specialized, vertical applications, such as telemetry, transaction processing and database access.

"Wireless data is only as good as the network that supports it, and the Verizon Wireless network is the most advanced in the country," said Tracy Nolan, president of Verizon Wireless' Illinois/Wisconsin Region. "Customers throughout a five county area -- Cook, Lake, DuPage, Will and Kane -- will benefit from the convenience of the high-speed connections now available with our Express Network. Verizon Wireless remains the only wireless service provider offering a sizeable advanced wireless network footprint."

Express Network is capable of data speeds bursting to 144 kilobits per second (kbps), with average throughput between 60-80 kbps. The speed is significantly higher than speeds offered by competing technologies and slightly higher than what PC users get when using a dial-up Internet service at home.

Both corporate and consumer customers using the Express Network can take advantage of the high-speed data delivery and robust Internet access via a Sierra Wireless AirCard 555 ($299.99) or the Kyocera 2235 ($79.99), a 1XRTT data-compatible wireless handset that acts as a modem. These devices allow customers to add voice, circuit-switched data and short messaging service capabilities to their laptops, select PDAs and other computing devices. Kyocera 2235 customers will also need a compatible Mobile Office kit, sold separately for $79.99.

Minute- or Data-Based Price Plans: Customers Can Make the Call

To give customer choices, Verizon Wireless is offering two different pricing options. For those customers accustomed to measuring wireless use by the minutes used, they can take advantage of the Express Network for an additional $30 per month on most digital voice calling plans. In this scenario, all minutes are "bucketed" for data or voice use. Customers that are heavy data users can take advantage of five rate plans that are based on actual data usage: starting at $35 per month for 10 megabytes, $55 per month for 20 MB, with tiers up to 150 MB of data.

"The extent and strength of our system gives our customers yet another strategic advantage as they increasingly rely on wireless products for their personal and business communications needs," said Nolan.

Express Network availability in the Northeast, several metropolitan Midwest areas and important cities in the South will extend the reach of the 1XRTT network to one third of the Verizon Wireless footprint, reaching more than 72 million Americans.

The Chicago market is the latest in a series of Express Network rollouts, following Norfolk, VA; Washington, D.C.; Baltimore; Philadelphia; New York; Boston; Portland, ME; Silicon Valley; the San Francisco Bay Area; and Salt Lake City, where Express Network was available during the 2002 Winter Olympics. Verizon Wireless is currently launching Express Network in several additional cities, including Pittsburgh and St. Louis, and will launch the network in other parts of the country later this year.
