The only wedge that can be driven between present understanding between US and Pakistan is lack of co-operation from Pakistan. US needs to get as much co-operation from Pakistan as possible in return they will ensure normalcy of governance and economic stability, an economically stable Pakistan will be less liable to be coerced by their sugar daddy Saudi Arabia. On one count you have made a VERY VALID POINT THAT IS loss of Arab influence over Pakistan, pre Sept 11 it was Saudi who would save Pakistan neck from likes of Clinton, now in reversal of fortunes I see a lot more Saudi Royalty visiting Pakistan practically every day, rather they use Presidents offices to convey or get feelers of Mr. Bush vis a vis Saudi, of course the loss of Arab pride and power of oil is no less a problem for Saudi, the political loss of capital for Arab world post 11th is so huge that 300 million Arabs are left with no say, on the flanks they see minor non-Arab nation breaking the strangle hold of Wahabis, that for a ordinary Mutawa is bad news but such is life, the hold of Wahabi extremism and Iranian extremism through a proxy war on countries like Pakistan had to be broken, they get their foot soldiers from these ands hit with eye popping poverty, if economic stability ushers Saudi and Iran will have see the back of their respective bran of foolish extremism.
