Sen. Jean Carnahan should win re-election in Missouri rather handily. Her opponent, who lost the gubernatorial race 16 months ago, is a lightweight. In addition, the sympathy factor remains for the late Mel Carnahan, a hugely popular governor. Sizable job cutbacks involving the aircraft industry and at Ford's Hazelwood plant will hurt the GOP in suburban St. Louis.

If the GOP does maintain control of the U.S. House in a few months, it will only be because of segregated redistricting maps drawn up in states such as Florida and Georgia.

The Republican Party has little room to grow.
