Hi, SirRealist -

With respect, you have misread the meaning of my words.

"In the global context, the failure of the United States and Israel to arrive at a political solution will only serve to exacerbate the situation."

I was referring to a future failure.

I will not deal with the rest of your post, because it goes to the question of "truth" and "the regrettable history" that predates the present events.

"Truth" has been lost in the consituencies. There is no truth, any more. There is no possibility of "truth". There is no longer any possibility of "justice".

Even on this thread, there is no agreement on the "truth". How can you expect people who have lost loved ones for generations to embrace a "truth" that even we cannot see?

Events have far outstripped "truth" and "justice".

But there is a possibility of peace and security for Israel.

"As noted by Hawk, if it comes to war the only compelling motive/principle is to win. I do not see much chance that any but Israel can accomplish exactly that."

For how long? How many months, or years, until the citizens of Israel are again faced with the same unrelenting attacks and hostility? How many years can they live in a state of constant alert, in an armed camp?

I am no appeaser. We have spoken before on the use of force. My post was directed at the question of what was ultimately in everone's best interest: most importantly, Israel's.

If it is your belief that the further killing of thousands, or even millions of Arabs and Jews will diminish the hostility and hatred, it is your right to say so. I believe that such actions will only inflame, and protract the situation, perhaps for centuries.

Israel may well choose to lash out, perhaps with nuclear arms, as you and others would have it.

The story that will be told, will be listened to, and will be believed, thousands of miles from the smoking ruins and the charred corpses, will prompt millions to dip into their meager savings and send money to Israel's attackers, with a prayer to Allah on their lips.

The true "commanders" of Israel's attackers will smile, sipping their tea, safe: hundreds or thousands of miles from the murderous horror of war.

At some point in the escalating spiral of violence we call "war", the combatants sit down, and a peace is arrived at.

I believe it is wiser to do it now.

Regards,

Jim
