Very well and thank you for your correction. I humbly submit that the negotiations you recommend have been ongoing for at least 50 years. To no avail. The enmity has existed for thousands of years, long before you accepted martial responsiblities. Successfull negotiations can occur only when both parties demonstrate exhibitions of "goodwill". Frankly, I see none coming from the Palestinians. All JMVVHO.

>> The advisability of going to war against an enemy who is well-funded, well-armed, has no home, no location, has the will to fight and die, and whose appearance is totally unpredictable is highly suspect. <<

What would motivate *this* enemy to accept a negotiated "perpetual security" for Israel? How would "presenting both the United States and Israel as responsible players" change *their* minds? Exactly how does that take the wind out of their sails rather than simply encouraging them to keep pushing even harder?

Personally, I'm no ME expert, but I sure don't see it.

Jim, we were pretty close, some 18 months ago to exactly what you advocate, maybe we pressed too hard...
