I don't believe much can be gained from emphasizing the trans-Atlantic differences. The USA needs Europe and every other ally it can find for "Enduring Freedom", and Europe needs the USA.

About the particular events in France: one has to face the fact that even in most Western democracies there is a 10-15% potential of ultra-right citizens, and I guess the USA are not much different.
